A report from Spanish publication Mundo Deportivo has claimed that there is a clause in Robert Lewandowski’s Barcelona contract, which states that if the Pole plays less than 50% of the games in the 2024/25 season, the Blaugrana can terminate his contract.
Despite Lewandowski’s recent dip in form, the veteran striker remains a valuable member of the squad so much so that Xavi looks up to him as someone who can influence the younger members of the squad.
However, at 35 years of age, the former Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich forward nearing the twilight of his career.
That coupled with the fact that Barcelona will be roping in a younger forward in Vitor Roque next year can eventually lead to less playing time, especially in the 2024/25 season.
So if the forward ends up playing less than 50% of the games next season, Barcelona will have the option to terminate his contract.
In the summer of 2022, Barcelona orchestrated a footballing coup, signing Lewandowski from Bayern Munich for a fee of €45 million, potentially rising to €50 million with add-ons, with the forward signing a four-year contract.
During his brief stint at Barcelona, Lewandowski’s presence has been nothing short of a seismic shift. His goal-scoring prowess ignited the hearts of the fans as he deposited the ball into the net 35 times across all competitions.
In the current season, and even before that, his status as the solitary striker has transformed him into the cornerstone of Xavi’s tactical edifice.
However, this narrative is not etched in stone, for the future remains an open canvas. A subtle shift in dynamics can occur with the emergence of a new contender within the roster, with Ferran Torres impressing and Roque’s arrival imminent.
The ink on his progressive contract looked like a promise, sealing Lewandowski’s fate as a future Barça legend until 2026 when the Polish striker would be 37 years old.
Yet, within the fine print of this grand pact lays a clause of intrigue. Should the striker’s boots not grace the pitch in at least half of the matches in the 2024/25 season, the club retain the right to sever the contract, a lifeline in their possession.
The pendulum of choice may sway when there is a fresh option on the horizon, introducing an element of unpredictability.
