La Liga Hispana is returning to Phillipsburg for its all-day soccer tournament on Labor Day.
The tournament will begin around 8:30 a.m. and run until 9 p.m. on Monday in Walters Park. The top two of each grouping will then go to the playoffs next weekend, organizers said.
“Everyone should come out,” said La Liga Hispana President Johnny Mancheno “There’s gonna be plenty of food, Spanish food, Mexican food, Honduran food, Guatemalan food and everybody’s welcome.”
Eight teams are currently signed up to play. Seven are homegrown from within the Lehigh Valley and one is traveling from Newark to compete, but more are welcome, Mancheno said.
Registration costs $600 per team. New teams can sign up by calling 484-903-1483.
Professional referee Carlos Bonilla will serve as director of referees for the event.
If you don’t play soccer, it’s fair to remember the game is a spectator sport.
“It’s just a good time for kids and families to get out and integrate with the community, especially the Hispanic community,” Mancheno said. “It should be a great time.”
Eight vendors are signed on to offer up a variety of foods, and Taco Town Food Truck is also scheduled to make a stop. DJ Carlos Zacrias will headline and host the event’s live music.
La Liga Hispana first started four years ago as a way to get local soccer fans and players together in one spot, Mancheno said. The league’s first game was held in Palmer Township.
Games are typically played on Sundays at Fountain Park in Allentown.
