Replacing the legendary midfield trio of Xavi Hernandez, Andres Iniesta and Sergio Busquets was never going to be easy for Barcelona.
After all, the three had defined an era in the middle of the park for the Blaugranas and were genius in their own individual ways.
Frenkie de Jong was just one of the club’s attempts at finding a worthy successor.
He has now established himself as a regular starter and one of the club captains, but the Dutchman’s path to success has been anything but easy.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, Mateu Alemany told the 26-year-old last summer that he was not counted on at the club.
He urged him to sign for Manchester United and look for the best solution for all parties involved.
The Dutchman’s departure, after all, would clear significant space on the wage bill and help Barcelona on the FFP front.
Indirectly, it would enable the club to register their new signings including Robert Lewandowski and Jules Kounde with ease.
De Jong refused to give in to the pressure and opted to stay and prove his worth to the manager.
As history has it, Barcelona not only managed to register last summer’s signings on time but also saw the rejuvenation of De Jong.
Barcelona may have three wins to their name in four La Liga games so far. However, the truth is that they have been far from convincing in all four games.
The 26-year-old Dutchman has been one of the Catalans’ most decisive players on that front.
De Jong has been flawless on the ball, completing a stunning 94% of his passes on average.
Further, he averages close to two key passes, two successful dribbles, and wins over 6 duels per game.
His exploits have tempted the management to start negotiating a contract renewal, albeit they hope to convince the player to take a pay cut.
