Rumor: PlayStation State of Play Event Coming This Month – GameRant

A recent announcement from Sony stirs up rumors that the company may be holding a PlayStation State of Play showcase sometime this month.
Sony may be preparing for another PlayStation State of Play showcase sometime in September. There have only been two such events so far this year, and fans are eager to hear more about some highly anticipated games and also learn what unannounced goodies may be coming to PS5 in the fall. The last State of Play took place in April, with the focus fully on Final Fantasy 16, which launched in June after years of waiting.
After the April 2023 State of Play, Sony held a full-fledged PlayStation Showcase in June and revealed, among other things, the long-rumored PlayStation handheld device that was then known only as Project Q. A number of other exciting announcements were made during the Showcase as well, such as the remake of Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and the release dates for Assassin’s Creed: Mirage and Alan Wake 2. Other games, like Spider-Man 2 and Dragon’s Dogma 2, got new trailers, and Bungie announced a revival of its first-person shooter IP called Marathon.

Of course, the excitement of these showcases fades rather quickly, and gamers are always eager for more. But the only news that fans got recently is that the price of a PlayStation Plus subscription will be going up substantially beginning on September 6. Industry insider Jeff Grubb stated on Twitter that he had heard rumors of a PlayStation State of Play coming soon, and this PS Plus price hike announcement seems to be a precursor to that.
All three tiers of PS Plus will be getting a price increase, with the annual cost of a Premium subscription, the highest tier, jumping by a whopping $40. So after that less-than-exciting announcement, PlayStation gamers are probably particularly ready to hear some good news from Sony. There are a ton of games scheduled for release on PS4 and PS5 in September, including Mortal Kombat 1, Neowiz’s Soulslike Lies of P, and of course Baldur’s Gate 3, the RPG that is breaking all kinds of records since its PC launch in August.
But the extremely hyped and highly anticipated Starfield is launching on September 6 for PC and Xbox Series X/S, and a lot of PlayStation console owners are understandably feeling a little left out. A State of Play showcase could be precisely what’s needed to cheer them up. In addition to trailers and release dates for games, a lot of people will be hoping to learn more about the PlayStation Portal handheld device because, although its $200 price tag and some specs have already been revealed, there’s still been no confirmation of a release date.
