Eight players managed to stay
Xavi is barely two years into the job as Barcelona‘s head coach, but he has already revolutionised the playing squad at his disposal.
To be fair, one can’t argue with the results, as last term the side claimed their first LaLiga crown since the 2018/19 season and their first in the absence of Lionel Messi.
Barcelona proved to be the class of the field in 2022/23 by winning LaLiga 10 points ahead of Real Madrid, whilst conceding just 20 goals in the entire campaign.
The team also added Supercopa de Espana to their collection, although they did experience a disappointing season in the Champions League and Europa League.
In just four windows, he has overhauled the squad, with only Marc-Andre ter Stegen, Inaki Pena, Sergi Roberto, Frenkie de Jong, Ronald Araujo, Alejandro Balde, Gavi and Pedri managing to survive the purge of the squad that sat a lowly ninth when Xavi inherited them.
The coach clearly believes in his philosophy and ideals and wasted no time in moving on some big names at the LaLiga giants.
Stars such as Memphis Depay, Phillipe Coutinho, Miralem Pjanic and Ousmane Dembele have all left, as Xavi demonstrates a similar kind of ruthlessness to what Pep Guardiola displayed in 2008.
Oscar Mingueza, Martin Braithwaite, Samuel Umtiti, Neto, Sergino Dest and Clement Lenglet also failed to retain their positions, while Eric Garcia and the highly-rated Ansu Fati have left on loan this summer in search of more playing time.
In the 22 months of Xavi‘s reign, there have been players who have gone out almost as quickly as they came in. For example, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Hector Bellerin and Franck Kessie found themselves in a revolving door, as did Adama Traore or Luuk de Jong.
Some older names have also retired or departed, namely Sergio Aguero, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets.
