The tournament, which will take place in Australia and New Zealand, is fast approaching
Rose Lavelle’s World Cup hopes are now in doubt after the USWNT and OL Reign star suffered yet another injury setback. The midfielder, who represented the US at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France, has not played since April 8 having sustained a knee injury in the second friendly match against Ireland.
“She was really on track to be back, then she had a little bit of a setback,” revealed OL Reign head coach Laura Harvey on Wednesday. “I would love her to be on the field tomorrow. I don’t think that’s gonna happen. I hope that we get to see her before the World Cup but honestly, right now I don’t know. … It changes all the time,” she explained.
The knock comes at an extremely unfortunate time for Lavelle. With the World Cup due to kick off in just under two months from now, the clock is most definitely ticking. What’s more, if she does manage to recover in time for the tournament, she will have to quickly get back up to match fitness, which is yet another process that takes time.
The USWNT kicks off its WC campaign on July 21 against Vietnam. A ‘send-off’ match has been scheduled against Wales on July 9, which will give the team one more opportunity to get a run out before their official campaign kicks off in New Zealand.
Lavelle has become a lynchpin in USWNT’s midfield over the past few years. At the 2019 France World Cup, she played six matches, scoring three goals. She’s made 88 appearances for the national side and is just 12 games shy of the century milestone.
It’s already been confirmed that Vlatko Andonovski will be without both midfielder Catarina Macario, who continues to work towards her recovery after tearing her ACL in June, and forward Mallory Swanson, who was stretchered off the pitch against Ireland in April after suffering a tear in the patellar tendon.
